  • Martina FechnerDear George I’m so glad I managed to talk to you just one more time in the last week of your life. I felt sad to see you with so little energy. My son Jack and I had so much fun when you were with us. I will always remember your constant high level of energy in everything you did. You loved riding your bike for long distances. I was amazed to see you checking once in a while that you were still able to jump up on your kitchen bench, only of course with a decent run up… You were the best tooth fairy I ever had! And Jack now at age 27 still has perfect teeth. You were a very thorough dentist! At work you always came out of your surgery to invite your next patient in an almost honouring way. I was surprised when I worked out what helped you calm down and fall asleep: of course, it was reading the book on your bedside table called ‘The Best Bridge Moves’! Thank you , George! 22nd August, 2024

  • Richard HillsThe Canberra Bridge Club used to have four Georges; Mad George (George Riszko), Bad George (George Jesner), Sad George (George Rothman), and Glad George (George Havas). In his last years I was Mad George’s regular bridge partner at the CBC. Despite his “brain fog” caused by fortnightly chemotherapy, George nevertheless demonstrated astute declarer play and cerebral bidding acumen. • Tonja JacobiDad, I knew I would miss you but I had no idea how much, there is a huge gap in my world where once there was your humor, your insights, your silliness, and all the many things I love about you. There is no-one else like you. Love always, T21st August, 2024
